PlayStation Network
November 8, 2009
I’ve been talking about my product, Sony PlayStation 3, for my social media class for a while, and yet I haven’t really talked much about the PlayStation Network. The PSN is one of the major uses of social media that Sony uses for its product. First, let me start by saying that the PSN is much more than just social media. It’s the network through which PS3 gamers can connect to play their games online.
However, there are a lot of social media aspects to the network. For one, everyone picks their own PSN ID. Big surprise, mine is ZeroStralem. Add me if you want. With these unique ids, you can add other friends, see what games they are in, view their hard-earned trophies and send them messages. Oh yeah, and you can pick an avatar for your PSN ID. Whenever you are connected to the PSN, you will get notifications in the upper right hand side of the screen indicating whenever one of your friends signs on or off. That way, if you’re wanting to talk to one of your friends so that you can kick their ass in KillZone 2, or any game for that matter, you can let them know as soon as they log in.
While connected, you’ll also get advertisements on what’s new in the PSN in the upper right when you’re in the PS3’s menu screens. For instance, today I found out the DLC for Brutal Legend is free for two weeks. I don’t own the game yet, but I know it’s one I’ll buy eventually, so I downloaded the content. They also have the PlayStation store where you can buy themes, wallpapers, games, game add-ons, etc. for your PS3 or your PlayStation Portable. They also have movies and TV shows that you can rent or buy.
The PSN is really Sony’s main way of staying in contact with and advertising to PS3 owners. Sony also has a blog that they announce news that pertains to any of their gaming products.
